The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025–26 from July 31 to September 15, 2025. This decision was made to accommodate several significant changes and ensure a smoother filing experience for taxpayers.
Reasons for the Extension
- Revisions in ITR Forms: The ITR forms for AY 2025–26 have undergone substantial structural and content changes aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting. These modifications require additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities.
- System Readiness: The updated forms necessitate corresponding updates to the e-filing portal and related utilities. Ensuring these systems are fully operational is crucial for accurate and efficient processing of returns.
- TDS Credit Reflections: Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) statements, due for filing by May 31, 2025, are expected to begin reflecting in early June. Without the extension, taxpayers would have had a limited window to reconcile these credits and file their returns accurately.
- Stakeholder Concerns: The extension aims to mitigate concerns raised by stakeholders, providing adequate time for compliance and ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process.
This extension is part of the government's broader efforts to modernize and digitize the tax administration system, aiming for a more seamless and taxpayer-friendly experience.
